Words by Mark Robinson I’ll be honest; this feature is written with the purpose of introducing anyone to Reuben who did not know who they were before. But also, because In Nothing We Trust is arguably one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated albums of the 21st century. It is bizarre to imagine, in the current musical climate, that there was a time when musical bigwigs would dare to throw money at bands like Hell is for Heroes and Hundred Reasons – perhaps that’s why they’re all broke now. But regardless, it was a wonderful time to be a disillusioned teenager spending your days clutching a copy of Nevermind, whilst being introduced to a glut of British post-rock bands at the turn of the millennium. Now thats what i call r. They ranged from great (the aforementioned Heroes and/or Reasons) to the not-so-great (A).
Album review- Reuben: In Nothing We Trust. Posted on June 30, 2017 by Mr Mid In the early 00’s, British underground rock music enjoyed a bit of a renaissance, bands the likes of Hundred Reasons, Hell Is For Heroes, Million Dead, they all started to profit from years of hard work and toil to be recognised. Somewhere wedged between the wealth of new bands were a little trio from Surrey called Reuben, who spent the better part of a decade struggling and clawing there way between albums, touring and trying to gain recognition. After their second album Very Fast Very Dangerous was released to respectable sales for a band of their stature (but not enough for Sony to recuperate sales invested in them) they were forced to leave their label.
From the ashes of Reuben’s trials and tribulations came their third (and to this day) final self-released album In Nothing We Trust. Released in 2007, it carries the battle-scars of singer/guitarist and lead principle songwriter Jamie Lenman. And though both bassist Jon Pearce and drummer Guy Davis added their own talents to the band (and we will discuss their talents) – Reuben was Jamie Lenman.
A man who so clearly wore his heart on his sleeves with raw, funny and often brutally truthful lyrics; but laid it to music that mixed straight-up hardcore punk and buzz saw metal riffs. Then there was the voice that could seemingly do anything; singing with impassioned vocals that soared, or gut-wrench screaming that somehow still managed to convey a pop sensibility. He was also a very funny bastard who showcased this at times in his lyrics, but also in other areas – such as on their self-produced and released DVD What Happens in Aldershot Stays in Aldershot. But the humour, while still there, was much darker this time around, and was perhaps a reflection of his mood during this period. Second track We’re All Going Home in an Ambulance conceptualises this perfectly, “ The taste of anyone’s fist // Is not a good vibe, or something I’ve missed”.
Also on display here is the drumming assault capable of Guy Davis, the middle-eight of this song some five years later still makes no sense. If you can come up with a time-signature – let me know. Deadly Lethal Ninja Assassin (featuring vocals from ex-Millionaire Dead front man Frank Turner) is a biographical discussion of Lenman’s youth “ swinging from the roof // showed everyone his ass” but also pointing out that he is “ Waiting for the break // that he knows will never come”, again a raw, honest account of his feelings at the time that would eventually lead to Reuben’s break-up only a year later.

Lyrically An Act of Kindness is perhaps Lenman’s strongest showcase of his talents: “ So you found yourself inside a prison with no escape // Tied to a gurney with thick red tape // Nursing a wound that is mother shaped”. But it is also a minefield of time-signature changes that somehow works melodically as well. This bleeds into Crushed under the Weight of the Enormous Bullshit which is an all out frontal assault on the music industry, with some of the most hideously placed chords ever put to music. “ All this eighties indie, sounds like shit to me // Cos I don’t like Joy Division, I don’t like Morrissey // or their new impersonators, kings of MTV // Suckling’s at the teat of the fucking NME and I can’t move on.” On the video diaries you can watch an amusing encounter between Lenman and producer Sean Genockey who points out he can’t quite understand what Jamie was singing, to which Lenman calmly responds; “ I was singing Razorlight, Razorlight, Razorlight” Sean: “ Were you? You don’t like them?” Jamie: “ No I don’t.” Sean: “ No I don’t like them.” Then comes the calmest point of the album: Good Luck one of the finest songs about getting hurt and being completely nonchalant about it all. It’s a showcase of Reuben in stripped down form that further cements just how good a songwriter Lenman is.
